Aldeburgh Cable Landing Station – Farland North

A beautiful day in Aldeburgh.  The cable marker indicates the approximate location of the Farland North submarine cable.

The characteristic beach manhole (BMH) can be seen here, with the diamond submarine cable marker in the top left of the photo.

The cable landing station is just a stone’s throw from the beach.

The cable marker above and exchange are consistent with the location of the Farland North cable as shown on the map below.

Steven, you ought to join the “The Submarine Cable Systems group” on LinkedIn. There has been some discussion of your posts there. Take care, Doug

Aldeburgh Cable Landing Station – Farland North

    Steven,

I don’t believe that the Farland North cable ever terminated in the repeater station building shown on your website. I worked in the station from 1965 until 1980 and was the station manager from 1982 until 1989. I remained in contact with the station staff until the station closed a few years ago. The building has now been converted to luxury apartments. I have tried on several occasions to find out the termination point of Farland North from BT sources but no one seems to know. There are two other cable landing stations in Aldeburgh but I know nothing of their current status.

I have a website on the history of Aldeburgh Telephone Repeater Station which I hope to complete shortly.

    Best wishes,

    Andrew
